It just happen. I was in a 'semi' daze traveling west on I-40 just passing the miles to our final stop of the day in Barstow , Ca. The distinctive sound of a Harley came thundering by, grabbing my immediate attention. I glanced down at the lone rider. Strapped neatly on the rear fender was a sleeping bag and another bag tucked in front of it served as a backrest, no passengers allowed on this ride. The rider wore a questionable legal helmet that will probably work better to display stickers than protect his head, but I'm not going to judge him here. He wore the standard uniform Biker black leather jacket with something sewed on the back that I could not make out. His arms extended out to the ape hanger handle bars, black gloves covered his hands. In a few seconds he was almost out of site and all I could see was the faint glow of his tail light.
At that moment it just came to me. It was plan, simple and as clear as the desert night sky, Let's ride to Daytona Beach for Bike Week.
I pulled the curtain back on the sleeper and yelled to my bride of 30 years to come up front. When she appeared between the seats I asked her 'what do you think about riding to Daytona?' Instead of my expected reply of 'We don't have the money, we can't take the time off work' I heard something totally different, 'Sounds like a great idea to me!'
As I started formulating my plan of attack for the upcoming trip, the thought of documenting it became clear. We had been going to Daytona for Bike Week every year since we bought our first Harley in the fall of 1991 (First Bike Week was 1992). We missed one year when our truck had the hood knocked off twice in February and REALLY did not have the money to go. In resent times we have not gone in the last two years, for several reasons that I won't go in to now.
All the years we have went, our memory have been clouded over time of the places we stayed, the things we have done . I don't want that to happen on this trip.
My goal is to document our trip and maybe bring some enjoyment to those that will take the time to read it.
